Clogged sewers can be a major headache for homeowners, leading to slow drains, backedup toilets, and costly repairs. Understanding the most common causes of clogs can help you take steps to prevent them.

In this article, we’ll explore the top 5 causes of clogged sewers and provide tips on how to avoid them.

Flushing Inappropriate Items

One of the primary causes of clogged sewers is flushing inappropriate items down the toilet. Items such as baby wipes, sanitary products, and paper towels can cause blockages in your sewer line. To avoid this, only flush toilet paper and waste down the toilet. Other items should be disposed of in the trash.

Pouring Grease Down the Drain

Pouring grease and oil down the drain is a common mistake that can lead to clogged sewers. Grease and oil solidify as they cool, forming a sticky substance that can adhere to the inside of your sewer pipes. To avoid this, always pour grease and oil into a container and dispose of it in the trash.

Tree Roots

Tree roots can grow into your sewer line, causing blockages and damage. To prevent this, avoid planting trees near your sewer line. If you already have trees in your yard, have a professional inspect your sewer line for any signs of root intrusion.

Broken Pipes

Broken pipes can occur due to age, and wear and tear, or other factors. Over time, the broken pieces can accumulate and cause blockages in your sewer line. To avoid this, have your pipes inspected regularly by a professional.

Flushing Non-Dissolvable Items

Flushing non-dissolvable items such as dental floss, cotton swabs, and hair can cause clogs in your sewer line. To avoid this, dispose of these items in the trash. Consider using a hair catcher in your shower drain to prevent hair from going down the drain.

Addressing clogged sewers as soon as possible is important to avoid costly repairs and potential health hazards. Here are some steps to follow when cleaning a clogged sewer:

Locate the source of the clog.

The first step in cleaning a clogged sewer is to locate the source of the blockage. If you’re experiencing multiple clogged drains in your home or business, the clog is likely located in the main sewer line. If the clog is isolated to one drain, such as a toilet or sink, the blockage may be located in the drain or pipe leading to that fixture.

Attempt to clear the clog with a plunger or drain snake

If the clog is located in a single drain or fixture, you may be able to clear it using a plunger or drain snake. Use a plunger to create suction and force the blockage through the pipe. If the plunger is unsuccessful, try using a drain snake to break up the clog and clear the pipe.

Call a professional plumber

If you’re unable to clear the clogged sewer using a plunger, drain snake, or sewer cleanout, it’s time to call a professional clogged drain plumber. A licensed plumber has the tools and expertise to clear the clog safely and effectively and prevent further damage to your pipes and plumbing system.

In conclusion, clogged sewers can be a frustrating problem for homeowners. However, by understanding the most common causes of clogs and taking steps to prevent them, you can save yourself time, money, and headaches in the long run.
